The Java vulnerability on Mac OS X reported here in May has been patched. The update is available through Software Update, accessible through the Apple menu at the top left of the Mac OS X screen. As a reminder, this does not apply to Microsoft Windows or Linux, which have been protected against this vulnerability for quite some time.

A Microsoft Windows update is causing Microsoft Outlook to re-download all email messages after the mandatory computer reboot. Please be advised that this is not a virus or anything malicious–the re-caching of messages is just part of the process.

In light of a severe Java vulnerability in Mac OS X, we recommend that Mac users disable Java. Because this vulnerability exploits Java, it works on all operating systems and all web browsers, but both Microsoft Windows and Linux have patched the vulnerability. Apple remains unpatched and therefore additional security measures are necessary.

For more information on how to disable Java, visit the Experts Documentation Wiki article Disable Java in Web Browser. If you need Java for your work–for instance, Java is required by Internet Native Banner (INB)–we recommend you install Mozilla Firefox and the NoScript plugin. Instructions for this can be found in the wiki article Firefox and NoScript.
