Thunderbird is an email client developed by the Mozilla
Corporation and maintained through the non-profit
Mozilla Foundation. The client is open source and
therefore freely available for use.
Thunderbird is a trademark of the Mozilla Foundation.
Uses
Thunderbird can be employed for a variety of uses due to
its support for HTML formatting, built-in RSS
capabilities, automatic spell check while you type, and
advanced mail filtering functions. Though its user
interface is very different from market standard
Microsoft Outlook, Thunderbird is gaining ground as a
solid email client and provides a good alternative to
pre-installed email clients.
Installing Mozilla Thunderbird
To install Mozilla Thunderbird, simply download the
client from Mozilla's website. Once you have saved the
executable to your computer, you can run it to install
Thunderbird.
Configuring Mozilla Thunderbird
Once you have installed Thunderbird, a setup wizard will
begin. By following the below steps, you can configure
Thunderbird to check your Missouri State Bearmail
Step 1: Import Settings
Select "Don't import anything" and click next.

Step 2: New Account Setup
Email Account should be selected by default. Click next.

Step 3: Identity
Type in your name and email address in the boxes
provided. This is how your name and email address will
be formatted when people receive your emails, so make
sure this information is accurate and properly
formatted. Your email address is
publicID@missouristate.edu

Step 4: Server Information
The next step will depend on whether you are setting up
your email client to check your email through POP3 or
IMAP. Select which protocol you desire and enter the
information as you see it below.
POP Server Settings

IMAP Server Settings

Step 5: User Name
Your username for incoming mail should be formatted as
domain\privateid\publicid. The domain for the
Springfield Campus is SGF while West Plains is on the WP
domain.

Step 6: Account Name
This step allows you to enter a descriptor for this
account. This name can be whatever you choose, but be
sure to pick something that will be easily recognizable
to you, especially if you will be setting up multiple
email accounts.

Step 7: Running Thunderbird for the first time
Thunderbird initially prompts you to choose whether you
will be using it as your default mail application. If
you are not yet certain whether you want to use
Thunderbird solely or if you are just testing it, select
no and leave the box unchecked. If you are comfortable
with Thunderbird and wish to use it as your default
application, check yes.

Step 8: Account Settings
Click on Tools and then Account Settings in the Menu Bar
at the top of Thunderbird. This will bring up your
account settings window.

Next, select Server Settings and change the highlighted
fields in the picture below so that your settings match
those pictured.
Be sure to use SSL and that your configuration matches
the protocol you chose earlier, either POP or IMAP.

Step 9: Outgoing Mail Settings
For Missouri State's Bearmail, you must enter your login
information to send mail as well as to receive your
email. Not all email servers require this but, for
security reasons, Missouri State asks you to enter your
login information when prompted.
Click the Edit button, which will bring up the window
you see below. On this screen, you will need to enter
your username as shown below and check the box marked
TLS. You will also need to change the port from the
default to 587.
Your username is formatted differently here than it is
for the incoming settings. Instead of domain\privateid\publicid,
you are only required to have domain\privateid for
outgoing mail.

Step 10: Login information
When you first attempt to send or receive mail, you will
be prompted to enter your login credentials. Your login
ID will already be entered from steps 5 and 9, so you
will only need to enter your password. Do so and click
the box marked Use Password Manager if you want
Thunderbird to remember your password. If you wish to
keep this information more private and not have it saved
by the program, do not check this box.
If you do not have Thunderbird remember your password,
it will ask you to enter the password every time you
check your email.
