Daylight Saving Time

Due to the enactment of the Energy Act of 2006 dates for the annual change to Daylight Saving Time (DST) have changed. As a result you may have notices that some of your appointments in your Microsoft Outlook calendar may be off by an hour.

Send Receive Problems

There have been reports of some e-mails to Missouri State addresses being denied and this site will address some of the current e-mail issues.

Issue One:
By far the biggest reason messages are undeliverable is because the senders IP is on a blacklist for sending out SPAM or having an open relay. For a good definition of what SPAM or an open relay are please click the following links: SPAM Open Relay

Missouri State, as well as many other Colleges and Universities, subscribe to a Realtime Blackhole Lists (RBL’s are spam cops). The ones we subscribe to are SPAMCOP.NET, SPAMHAUS, DSBL (Distributed Sender Blackhole List), CBL (Composite Blocking List), Blackholes.us, and SORBS (Spam and Open Relay Blocking System). If a site receives email they believe to be spam, they send a complaint to the RBLs who then block that site from communicating with our site. We cannot remove someone from a black list; the blocked company or sender must contact them.

When a message is rejected because of a blacklist the sender will receive an undeliverable message with information at the bottom on why it was rejected. Many times the message will list the RBL that has blocked the sender and have a link to the RBL and at other times it will just be a generic message listing the IP address that was blocked.

Issue Two:
A less likely reason an e-mail may be undeliverable is that their server has a malformed address. The problem stems from their site using an underscore ("_") in their DNS name (the DNS RFC does not allow for underscores). Many service providers are simply not aware of the requirements and if you think this may be your problem simply ask your domain administrator about their DNS name.

Issue Three:
The least likely reason for a rejection is that the address being sent to does not exist. Starting February 2, 2007 the old SMSU email addresses no longer forward email to your new Missouri State email account. Please check to ensure that people that need to communicate with you have your proper email address.
