There are many suppliers of broadband or high speed Internet access (e.g. MediaCom, AT&T Yahoo, Earthlink, etc). These services can provide access speeds similar to (or faster than) those available on campus. The vendor provides you with a modem that will allow you to connect your computer to the Internet.
Cable providers will use their coaxial cable lines that are in place in your home. DSL providers will use your existing phone lines to provide normal phone service and high speed DSL service simultaneously. Unlike dialup, DSL allows you to access the Internet and speak on the phone at the same time. There is no need for a second phone line.
A wireless network can be set up in your home once you have a broadband provider. In most cases, you are required to purchase a wireless router, which allows you to share your Internet connection with other wireless equipped devices you may have (e.g. desktop computer, laptop, PDA, Mobile Phone, etc.).
To access Missouri State resources (on-campus servers, etc) via broadband, you first need to start the VPN software.
A Help Desk representative can provide you with further information and can suggest options that may be available to you when considering high speed broadband to access resources at Missouri State University. You may call the Help Desk at 417-836-5891.
